Stay Active and Independent for Life

Designed for individuals aged 65 and older, Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) is a program focusing on strength, balance, and fitness. Engaging in exercises that enhance these components is a key factor in promoting an active lifestyle and minimizing the risk of falls. Consistent participation in the comprehensive activities outlined in the SAIL program can contribute to the improvement of strength and balance.

  • Benefits have been proven with individuals 65 years and older.

  • Men and women of all ages are welcome to attend.

  • Some sites may require membership or charge an additional fee.

  • Seated exercise accommodations can be made for those with limited mobility.

  • Workshops are available both virtually and in-person.  The virtual class requires a device fully capable of viewing the SAIL Leader and no form corrections are available with this option.

  • SAIL is structured as a minimum of 12 weeks or an ongoing class offering.

  • Results require attendance a minimum of two times a week.

What does a SAIL class consist of?

  • A 55-minute exercise class consisting of cardio, balance, strength, and stretching exercises. 

  • Exercises can be done seated or standing.

  • Participants are encouraged to use cuff weights appropriate for their ability, and then continue to challenge themselves.

How does SAIL benefit older adults and/or caregivers?

  • Increase the performance of daily activities;

  • Improve strength, balance, fitness, and flexibility;

  • Increase knowledge of fall risk factors; and

  • Decrease feelings of depression and social isolation​

*The benefits of SAIL require continual participation in SAIL or some other similar type of exercise program.
